Marquesitas

Marquesitas is a popular Mexican street food/dessert and snack native to the Yucatan state of Mexico. The first time I was introduced to Marquesitas I was a little reluctant to try it because I never thought of combining cheese and Nutella. I didn’t think it would be tasty, but to my surprise it was delicious and I am hooked.

Marquesitas are made on a hot iron that resembles a waffle iron. It is a crepe rolled like a burrito filled with the popular Edam cheese ad Nutella Chocolate. The Edam is a bit of salty cheese but nevertheless, it is a really delicious contrast with Nutella Chocolate. There are many variations of Marquesitas in Mexico filled with different kinds of fruits, candy toppings, and sweet sauces. Some of the main ingredients are flour, egg, milk, butter, and various toppings including cajeta, jam, chocolate, or Edam cheese.

Fun fact Marquesitas was created in the 1930s by an ice cream vendor who didn’t have many customers in the winter season. So to attract customers in the winter season he came up with a sweet treat that consist of jams and the salty taste of queso de bola and born was Marquesitas.

Have you ever tried a Maquesitas? If not would you try it? What topping would you like to try on your Marquesitas?
